We so loved our first trip to Tahiti that when I heard of a super cheap deal on Perx (airline employee discount company) for the Paul Gauguin, I was all over it! The Paul Gauguin is a luxury ship that sails French Polynesia. I had heard of it years ago when my friend, Carole Quarles, told me about it. She's been instrumental in my "to-do" list of travels! At any rate - I did a HORRIBLE job of blogging this trip, but I'll try to give the highlights...
We arrived early and spent a couple of nights on Tahiti at the InterContinental before boarding the ship. One day we drove around the island with the intention of visiting the Paul Gauguin Museum, but we arrived to find it closed. We visited a few other attractions along the road, which were pretty, but of the islands we've visited, Tahiti is definitely the least pretty. Our second day we spent at the resort, lounging and swimming in the 2 pools. They were renovating some of the overwater bungalows, but we still got to stay in one and it was glorious. We love us some overwater bungalows!

On the way to the ship, we drove by the Mormon Temple. It was curiosity as much as anything, but I do have a Mormon family. The Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii demonstrates the prominence of the religion in the islands, so I figured it would be interesting to see.

Our cruise took us to 4 islands - Huahine, Taha'a, Bora Bora, and Moorea. We had previously visited Bora Bora and Moorea, but did manage to see some different things while we were on those islands. We spent the week snorkeling, touring, and sampling the cocktail of the day.
In Huahine, our excursion was a "Motu Picnic." We went to the lagoon of Huahine - under the bridge that connects Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti. The water was beautiful!! From our first snorkel spot, we then traveled to Motu Murimahora for our picnic (in the water to deter the bugs!) and then across to our second snorkel spot.

Our next stop was Taha'a - the vanilla island. Our excursion was an exploration of the island. We went to a beautiful lookout point - the highest point on the island you can reach by vehicle. We also stopped at a black pearl farm and a vanilla farm. The scent of the fresh vanilla drying in the sun was delicious!!!

After our excursion, we had the Beach BBQ at Paul Gauguin's private island - Motu Mahana. The food was good - drinks were plentiful - sun was shining - and we even did a little snorkeling.

Our next stop was Bora Bora and our excursion was an Off Road Adventure. We imagined it to be a bit like our off road adventure in Moorea from our first trip, and to some extent, it was. We visited one of the U.S. cannons still standing in its original World War II location, when the U.S. was intent to defend these islands. We also traveled up to the Radio Tower to have a view of the incomparable Bora Bora Lagoon, and made a stop at Matira Beach.

We spent some time relaxing on the ship and then moved on to our final island - Moorea - where we opted for a sunset cruise on our first day and a snorkel trip on the second day. Our snorkel trip was similar to the one we did in Bora Bora in 2008 - swimming with black-tipped reef sharks and stingrays.

Back in Papeete, we took the ferry back to Moorea for a stay at the end of our trip at the InterContinental there. I actually liked the resort on Tahiti better than the one on Moorea. We didn't rent a car there, so we just spent our time at the resort. Our bungalow on Moorea also wasn't really over the water. It was at the edge of the water, but the main part of the building was on land. That has nothing to do with why I liked the Tahiti resort better, but just thought I would mention it. They have a dolphin adventure there and also a sea turtle rescue, which I thought was amazing.

With that, our island adventure came to an end. There are still things to see in this beautiful part of the world, so I hope that Tahiti Part Trois will be in our future.
